Production and responsibility
Production at Hujaus
- Most of our garments are manufactured on a subcontracting basis by our partners in Espoo, Finland. Additionally, we use seamstresses in Estonia for extra help during busy periods. The same product may be produced in both Finland and Estonia; you can find the country of origin for an individual garment on its care label. Our jeans are manufactured in Estonia at the Masi Jeans factory. The Fiini and Bueno models are produced in both Finland and Portugal at the Finnish-owned Black Moda factory, with the specific country of origin indicated on the care label. Our products made in Finland carry the Key Flag symbol (Avainlippu).
- Our production is planned so that we do not have to predict demand far in advance; instead, we can order additional production as needed based on actual demand. This ensures we have no unsold stock and zero finished product waste, as we sell everything we make. We work closely with our sewing workshops; for example, if a garment has a defect or a seam gives way, the workshop can repair it so the item can be put back into use.
- As a domestic brand, we offer quality, responsibility, genuine interaction, and practical designs. Product development is carried out together with our customers, and many of our products originated directly from customer requests. For instance, regarding trousers, we started with leggings and loungewear. When pandemic-era remote work recommendations ended, our customers requested neat trousers to replace work-from-home sweatpants, which we promptly created. Based on customer feedback, we have also launched the LONG collection featuring longer leg lengths and gradually expanded our size range up to 3XL.
- We encourage considered and long-lasting clothing purchases. We make clothes for everyday use, not to serve as decoration in a wardrobe. Our garments are comfortable, practical, functional, easy to combine, and timeless in both material and design.
Sustainability
In addition to production, we strive to operate as responsibly as possible regarding materials and general operations.
-
Certifications: Most of our materials hold the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certificate, guaranteeing that the material is tested and safe for the user, free from harmful levels of chemicals, skin-friendly, and uses non-toxic dyes. A large portion of our cotton is GOTS- or OCS-certified organic cotton. The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification requires that at least 95% of the fiber used originates from organic farming without chemical pesticides or fertilizers, utilizing efficient water recycling and post-production purification. GOTS also enforces compliance with International Labour Organization (ILO) criteria across the supply chain, guaranteeing fair wages, reasonable working hours, safe conditions, and strict bans on child or forced labor and discrimination. OCS-certified cotton also requires at least 95% certified organic material, though it does not cover processing standards like GOTS. Material certifications for each item are listed under the "material" section on the product cards.
-
Material Origins: A large portion of our fabrics is manufactured in Portugal, with additional fabrics sourced from Finland, Lithuania, and Turkey. Specific fabric origins are listed on each product card under "material".
-
Zero Waste & Cutting Offcuts: We minimize material waste during cutting using optimized layout plans and develop secondary uses for fabric scraps. We also donate leftover cutting pieces to schools and other institutions.
-
Minimizing Returns: We aim to keep exchanges and returns very low to avoid unnecessary transport emissions, which is both ecologically sound and convenient for everyone. We invest heavily in clear product photography, videos, detailed descriptions, and precise sizing guides (including body measurement charts, garment measurement charts, and visual measuring instructions). Customers can also contact us at info@hujaus.fi for direct assistance with sizing.
